Did you ever notice that most times you enter a casino, the hall is
lined with rows and rows of slot machines... and perhaps a roulette
table, or perhaps one poker table?
There's a reason why that is, although this isn't due to the casino
needing an extra array of lights or sounds, that the gambling palaces
populate the place with slots. The thinking in their ubication is made
with a far more sensible objective.
Because it's fact... casinos and gambling are multi-million dollar operations.
From the gambling hall's point of view, the slots are the casino's
money horse. Pound for pound (or should we say "coin for coin"?) slots
make the casino more money than poker, or blackjack.
Most players will think that poker and blackjack are the casino's biggest money-making games, but the truth may surprise you.
We can forego the mathematical model of the roulette game (which you
can find in Wikipedia, under "Roulette"), but know that the profit
margin for an European / French roulette wheel is less than 2.7%, and
the American roulette margin figures lower yet.
Today, the objective is to point out some of the main points as to why these matters are in essence.
Misconceptions abound of the modality of betting really functions at
the table, and you can fault all those 007 movies, if you believe all
punters are betting thousands (or tens of thousands) with each flick of
the wrist. It doesn't really happen like that. Most folks really aren't
multi-millionaires throwing chips like shooting skeets.
Bets are most times rather small, because of a possibility of high payouts with even small bets.
In these instances, just a $25 bet could bag you nearly $1,000.
Because of leverage such as that, it's no wonder almost all punters
place conservative bets!
It sometimes happens that casinos might get a pro hitting it big at
the table, scooping up a jackpot like $250,000. Of course, it certainly
isn't the norm... although when it does happen, the casino really feels
it.
Slot machine bets are also usually very conservative. Generally
thought of as a casual gambling game, in the majority of cases. However,
you can find some high-roller slots in casinos, which sometimes are as
high as $100.00 a pull .
Payouts in slots are not that high, due to a very high number of
chance and probablity factors that 3 or more reels turn out in a payout
combination. Because of this, casinos bank better proceeds thanks to
with slot machines, instead of other games.
Another income producing upper hand slots have over their more
glamorous counterparts is that, in the case of table games, casinos are
up against multiple opponents at the same time; thus, the casino's
chances of losing are markedly increased.
These odds stacked against the House could furthermore be composite,
given that a winning combination could come from more than one player
betting, even though some don't pull it off. To facilitate this, there
are sometimes people working covertly, as if they were casual gamblers
who don't know each other.
In the example of blackjack, the dealer could end up staying on a low
hand, and fstill forced to payout all those players who did better than
the House. And if the punter played a "double down", it can cost the
casino twice as much on that "full" BlackJack combination.
Lastly, crafty players try to use systems and methods which sometimes
present the gambler with an upper hand, when players are able to pull
them off. Obviously, casinos are always on the lookout for people doing
stunts like these. Which is why if you're caught "counting cards",
you'll be ushered out unglamorously by the men in black .
Despite the odds being mostly poised in the casino's court, hence the
adage, "The House ALWAYS wins in the end", casinos don't like "unfair"
advantages... at least, for gamblers .
There's a lot of money in the gambling industry, so they are very
much ahead of their game when the issue is their security and guarding
their interests (i.e., advantages). A full network of strategically
placed CCTV cameras ARE watching you, as well as the plain-clothes
security crew . Card counting, sleight of hand, accomplices... all these
things will get you barred, as soon as you are identified as trying to
ool the House.
But getting back to the main point, poker and blackjack can present a
lot of risks for the Casino, because of some tricks that gamblers could
use to beat the House . That said, no systems can produce any effect
against the slot machines, so for these reasons the one-arm bandit
remains the casino's auto-pilot big revenue producer.
But perhaps, the greatest of advantages slots leverages (as with any
gambling game), is that slots is a tease in winning big. With slots,
most times a player is close to winning even a small payout, and this
psychological advantage the House has with slots keeps a lot of people
pulling that lever beyond any reasobale limit. You're always thinking,
"OOOH! SOOO close!. Come on, one more.... ARGH!!!".
Casinos leverage all they can, so the first thing they show you when
you walk into the casino is the slot machines, instead of the roulette
tables. It's a, business where the game is NOT roulette - it's winning
as often as they can, and they've done their homework .
Although it can be fun to blow a little money on casinos and slots
every now and then (who doesn't like the idea of winning a fat
jackpot?), always excercise your own common sense, and never bet money
you can't afford to lose!
